Abstract:
This study examined the influence of competitive intensity on the performance of telecommunication firms in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated how price competition and service differentiation impact financial performance and customer satisfaction. A cross sectional research design was adopted. The population comprises 148 managers and supervisors of the four major telecommunication firms in Rivers State. Data were collected from 127 respondents drawn from selected telecom firms operating in the state. Spearman's rank-order correlation was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between price competition and both financial performance and customer satisfaction. Similarly, service differentiation showed a strong positive correlation with the two performance indicators. The study concluded that competitive intensity, when properly managed, can enhance firm outcomes. It recommends that telecom firms should adopt dynamic pricing strategies and invest in service innovations to improve performance in a competitive market environment.
