Abstract:
This current research examined how communication media affects daily management, medication, and disease control in poultry production systems in Delta State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling method was used to sample 318 respondents including broilers and layer farmers and extension agents spread in three agricultural zones. The data were collected with the help of a structured interview schedule that was tested by experts and demonstrated its reliability (r= 0.87). The data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistical methods, such as Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that television programmes and radio broadcasts were the most common media sources that were used to obtain information on proven breeds and to undertake regular management functions. On the other hand, social media like WhatsApp or Facebook became more often used in medication and disease control, and less often, extension agents and print media were mentioned. The ANOVA resulted in a significant effect (F = 41.517, p < 0.01) of the utilisation of communication media to the four aspects of production studied. The study therefore hypothesises that communication media is of great importance in poultry management but it is used differently depending on intention and availability. It is advisable that the agricultural extension agencies and policy-makers should encourage blended use of both traditional and contemporary communication media to increase access to timely and accurate poultry information by farmers.
