Abstract:
This study examined the multiple dimensions of Filipino family involvement across demographic variables through a pilot translation and validation of the Philippine-Cebuano version of the Family Involvement Questionnaire (FIQ) of Grover (2015) for use in a high school setting. The participants were the 400 parents/guardians of Grade 7 to 12 students enrolled at public high school during the 2020-2021 school year. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure across 34 items, consistent with the original FIQ-HS: home-school communication, home-based activities, and school-based activities. However, confirmatory factor analysis of the 34-item hypothesized Philippine-Cebuano Family Involvement Questionnaire (FIQ-P) produced a cleaner, moderately fitting 23-item nested model. The three scales of the FIQ-P-23 demonstrated acceptable reliability, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .68, .81, and .90. Findings suggest that the FIQ-P is an acceptable assessment tool for measuring family involvement among culturally diverse Filipino families. To strengthen the generalizability of these results, it is recommended that future studies replicate the validation of the FIQ-P with larger and more diverse samples across different schools, provinces, and regions in the Philippines.
