Abstract:
This study examines the role of public relations strategies in crisis management within Bristow Helicopters Ltd, Port Harcourt, focusing on how communication influences organisational reputation, stakeholder trust, and operational continuity. Guided by two objectives, the research explores the PR strategies employed and their effectiveness. Grounded in the Situational Crisis Communication Theory, Image Restoration Theory, and Contingency Theory of Strategic Conflict Management, the study adopts a quantitative survey method. A sample size of 270 was surveyed utilizing census sampling technique, and data was analysed using the Weighted Mean Score (WMS). Findings reveal that Bristow employs a mix of proactive and reactive PR strategies, including press releases, stakeholder briefings, and internal communication. These strategies are generally effective in mitigating reputational damage and restoring confidence, though digital engagement remains underutilized. The company's approach aligns with international standards, particularly in transparency, post-crisis learning, and CSR initiatives. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that public relations are a vital asset in Bristow's crisis management framework. While progress has been made, greater investment in proactive messaging, digital platforms, and stakeholder engagement is essential for enhancing resilience and sustaining trust in the aviation sector. Public relations, when strategically applied, ensure credibility, operational stability, and long-term survival.
