Abstract:
Dynastic politics has become a defining feature of Bangladesh's political landscape, shaping leadership, organisational behaviour, and democratic culture across its major political parties. This study provides a comparative analysis of dynastic structures within the Awami League, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and the Jatiya Party, examining how familial succession, historical narratives, and personalised political authority have shaped party identity and decision-making over time. Drawing on secondary literature, political histories, and party documents, the study explores the mechanisms through which dynasties are sustained, their influence on political competition, and their broader implications for democratic consolidation in Bangladesh. The analysis reveals that while dynastic leadership offers continuity, symbolic legitimacy, and organisational stability, it simultaneously restricts internal democracy, narrows leadership diversity, and entrenches political polarisation. The study concludes by outlining key findings, offering evidence-based recommendations, and highlighting the structural limitations inherent in assessing dynastic practices through secondary sources alone.
