Abstract:
This investigation explored the connection between strategic response capabilities, encompassing both adaptive and proactive responses, and sustainability, which includes economic and environmental dimensions, within oil and gas companies located in Rivers State, Nigeria. This study was grounded in dynamic capability theory, utilising a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires from 204 management personnel across 82 midstream oil and gas companies, which were selected purposefully from a total population of 328. The sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan's formula, with a 20% adjustment made for potential attrition. The reliability assessments yielded Cronbach's alpha coefficients exceeding 0.7 for each of the measures. The evaluation of hypotheses was conducted through Spearman's Rank Order Correlation, utilising a significance level of 0.05. The findings revealed a significant association between proactive response and economic sustainability, while no such association was found with environmental sustainability. The adaptive response did not show a significant association with economic and environmental sustainability. The findings indicate that improving proactive strategies can boost economic performance; however, incorporating environmental conditions into both proactive and adaptive responses is essential for achieving overall sustainability.
