Abstract:
: Child hawking is a pervasive socio-economic challenge in Nigeria where children are forced to engage in street vending, exposing them to exploitation, abuse, and psychological trauma, ultimately hindering their development and future. This paper examines the psychological effects of child hawking among 100 school-age children (6-17 years) in Bori metropolis. Anchored on the Bandura's social learning theory, the study reveales severe psychological implications, including anxiety, fear, emotional distress, low self-esteem, and disrupted education. Child hawkers experience absenteeism, poor academic performance, and increased dropout rates. The study emphasizes the urgent need for policy interventions, poverty alleviation programs, and improved access to education. A multi-sectoral approach involving government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community stakeholders is required to protect vulnerable children. Recommendations include developing policies to protect children from exploitation and implementing poverty alleviation programs. Addressing the psychological implications of child hawking and promoting sustainable economic development, can aid Nigeria in ensuring a brighter future for its children and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study's findings highlight the need for collective action to protect children and promote their well-being, ultimately contributing to Nigeria's sustainable development.
