Abstract:
This paper explores succession planning as a strategic mechanism for ensuring leadership continuity and organisational sustainability in Pentecostal churches across Africa. Grounded in Transformational Leadership Theory and Stewardship Theory, the study employs a conceptual and case-study approach, analysing documented transitions in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. Findings reveal that churches with intentional succession policies, structured mentoring, and governance frameworks-such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Church of Pentecost-sustain stability and growth beyond their founders. Conversely, ministries without clear succession structures often experience leadership crises, fragmentation, or closure after the founder's demise. The paper concludes that planned succession, rooted in stewardship and transformational leadership principles, is vital for organisational resilience in African Pentecostalism.
