The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sustainable contract monitoring and project performance of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) project implementation units in South-South, Nigeria. This study adopted sequential explanatory mixed method design. Primary data generated through structured closed and open-ended questionnaire respectively for both the quantitative and qualitative strands of the study. The population of this study is the seventeen MDBs project implementation units in the six South-South States, in Nigeria that are presently implementing live MDBs projects within the South-South on behalf of the MDBs. Consequently, the respondents for this study on the quantitative strand is made up of the team members of the 17 project implementation units which sum total is one hundred and fourteen officers/specialists, while the qualitative strand followed up with three selected focus groups consisting of 18 participants to investigate the quantitative results in more detail via focus groups discussions. The hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula and the quantitative findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between sustainable contract monitoring and project performance of multilateral development banks project implementation units projects South-South, Nigeria. The quantitative findings were followed up with qualitative data collection and the results from the qualitative data analysis confirmed the outcome of the quantitative findings. This study concludes that sustainable contract monitoring has a relationship with project performance, and that sustainable contract monitoring is an important mechanism that influences and predicts project quality and time of delivery in MDBs Projects in South-South, Nigeria. The study thus recommends that organizations in both the public and private sectors of developing countries like Nigeria in the world should scale-up their sustainable contract monitoring practices as a strategic tool in all their projects to continuously and sustainably improve on their project performance and to achieve the United Nations sustainable Agenda set for year 2030.
