Title: Assessment of English Language Education Curriculum Elements at Universities in The Gambia

Abstract:
This study investigated English Language Education Curriculum in public and private universities in The Gambia and examined the curriculum elements of English Language Education. This was meant to establish their compliance levels with the standards for quality education at universities in The Gambia. Developed research instruments; namely, the Curriculum Deskwork Analysis Inventory (CDAI) and Quality of University Lecturers Questionnaires (QULQ) were used to gather information from English Language Education lecturers and the two English Language Education Curricula submitted from both the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the International Open University (IOU). Data collected was analyzed using mean, percentages, and standard deviation. The results showed the only similarity between UTG and IOU was some course codes and course titles listed in the two curricula. Besides, the results also showed differences in curriculum elements (objectives, methods, materials, contents, and evaluation strategies) of English Language Education between the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the International Open University (IOU). Finally, the results showed the quality of English Language Education lecturers at the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the International Open University (IOU). It had a 6-Likert scale and the bench mean mark is 3.5. From the results, all the items had mean values greater than the mean mark, ranging between 3.81 and 4.68. It followed that the majority of the respondents rated English Language Education lecturers at UTG and IOU very high. The mean aggregate, 4.32, was greater than the mean benchmark. It confirmed that the rating was very high. Finally, the research findings showed that the respondents had high ratings for the lecturers in both universities.
