Abstract:
This study assessed the workshop resources for teaching and learning Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works practices in technical colleges in Lagos and Ogun State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. A descriptive survey research design was utilized. The population consisted of 52 respondents: 22 teachers and 30 school administrators. A well-structured questionnaire titled "Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works Resources Questionnaire (EIMWRQ)" was validated by three experts: two from the Department of Electrical/Electronic Technology Education, Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos, and one from the Department of Technical and Vocational Education, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos. Cronbach's Alpha statistics were used to analyze the collected data, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.83. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the two research questions, while the two null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance using t-test statistics. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23 was used to analyze all numerical data. The findings revealed, among other things, that consumable materials in Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works practice-such as electrical wires and cables, cable connectors and terminals, electrical tape, junction boxes and accessories, circuit breaker cartridges, and switches and sockets-are available for teachers in technical colleges in Lagos and Ogun State. It is recommended, among others, that consumable materials such as soldering materials, fasteners and fixings, PVC conduit cement/glue, and fluorescent tube starters be adequately provided in technical colleges for the effective implementation of the Electrical Installation curriculum. Furthermore, the state government should ensure there are adequate electrical installation and maintenance workshop resources to enable teachers to demonstrate the basic concepts of teaching the subject in technical colleges.
