Title: Hematological Alterations among Entamoeba histolytica Infected Patients in Surman Region

Abstract:
Background: Intestinal parasites infection continues to be a serious public health issue. The protozoa parasite Entamoeba histolytica is a major global source of human morbidity and mortality. Blood parameter changes are one of the many issues that may result from it. Objectives: The present study aimed to assessment the hematological changes among Entamoeba histolytica Infected Patients in Surman Region. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 300 stool samples over a period from 10 January to August, 2024. They were divided into two groups, including 200 samples infected with the Entamoeba histolytica parasite and 100 healthy samples (confirmed to be free of disease infection) in the Surman region with age between 19 years and 60 years. Ethical approve and patients consent statement were taken from everyone and the study was performed in Surman General Hospital, and some Clinical laboratories in Surman city in West Libya. 3mL of blood from each participant was drawn by venipuncture into dipotassium ethylenediamine-tetraacetate containing Vacutainer tubes. All samples were processed for analysis immediately after collection. Peripheral blood baseline parameters were measured using Sysmex KX 21 analyzer. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS version 25 statistical analysis program to express the results. The statistical significance of differences between groups was evaluated with the independent t-test. The data were expressed as mean ± SE. The results were considered statistically significant when p<0.05. Results: The results showed a significant (P<0.01) decreased in RBCs counts, Hematocrit value, hemoglobin content, MCH, MCHC, neutrophils%, and blood platelets count, and a significant increased in WBCs count, lymphocytes %, and mixed % in the E. histolytica-infected compared with the healthy individuals. Conclusion: In comparison to the control group, it can be inferred that the hematological parameters in E. histolytica-infected patients exhibited substantial changes in the counts of red blood cells and their indices, white blood cells, leukocyte differential counts, and blood platelets. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of amoebiasis patients depend on routine blood parameter monitoring.
