Abstract:
This article examines the United Nations' (UN) conflict resolution approach during the 2010-2011 post-election crisis in Côte d'Ivoire. It investigates the root causes of the crisis following the 2010 presidential election and evaluates how UN intervention helped restore political stability in the country. The research argues that whilst the UN Security Council's peacekeeping operations aimed to ensure peaceful elections and prevent political chaos, they did not adequately address underlying ethnic and religious tensions. Nevertheless, UN involvement proved crucial in resolving the immediate conflict and stabilising the volatile political situation. Using structural functionalism theory and qualitative research methods, the study draws on secondary data analysed through content analysis. The findings reveal that although UN intervention successfully prevented the crisis from escalating, insufficient attention was paid to peacebuilding efforts essential for post-conflict recovery. This oversight highlights the need for more comprehensive approaches to conflict resolution that address both immediate political crises and underlying societal tensions.
