Abstract:
The research assesses the effect of corruption in the Nigerian public sector, concentrating on Owerri West Local Government. The study, directed by a singular research aim and associated research question, is based on Public Choice Theory formulated by James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock. The study used survey research designs, using both primary and secondary data sources to get pertinent information. The data were displayed in tables and evaluated using basic percentages. The study hypothesis was evaluated using regression analysis techniques facilitated by Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The researchers concluded from the test of the hypothesis that several variables contribute to the pervasive corruption within the public service of Owerri West Local Government. The study recommended enhancing transparency and accountability in Owerri West Local Government by implementing measures such as publishing budgetary and expenditure data and ensuring public officials are held accountable for their actions. Additionally, it suggested strengthening and adequately funding various anti-corruption laws and agencies, improving their training and capacity, and granting them genuine autonomy to operate effectively.
