Abstract:
The study assessed school sanitation facilities affecting inclusion and retention of pregnant girls in primary schools in Kateta Sub-county, Serere district. A descriptive research design was used. 150 respondents were selected for this study and these included 3 Head teachers, 27 teachers, 55 parents and 65 pupils. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The study revealed that, most primary schools had separate pit latrines for girls, a reliable and a back-up source of water, urinals for girls, and hand-washing facilities. However, most primary schools did not have bathrooms and changing rooms for girls, anal cleansing materials. The study concluded that the inclusion of pregnant girls is not sustainable due to unfavorable school sanitation facilities in primary schools in Kateta sub-county. The researchers recommended that, School Sanitation Policy should be fast tracked, teachers, parental involvement was key while the capacity of schools to handle pregnant girls needed to be improved upon.
