Abstract:
This study was carried out to analyse newspaper advocacy on gender-based crime towards out-of-school children in Lagos State. The objectives of the study were to: examine the prominence of newspaper coverage against gender-based crime towards out-of-school children in Lagos; analyse the frequency of newspaper article against GBC in Lagos and to investigate the tone of coverage against gender-based crime towards out-of-school children in Lagos state. The researcher adopted the content analysis research design. Taro Yamane sample size determination formula was used to calculate the sample size of the study. Findings indicated that the select newspapers accurately reflect the concern of victims and the entire public on gender-based crime in Lagos State. Therefore, the select newspapers have made notable contributions to curbing gender-based crime in Lagos State by featuring stories on GBC on front pages of most of the select newspapers. These efforts have advocated for measures that amplify victim's voices and ensure perpetrators are held accountable and punished. Furthermore, the newspaper coverage have also highlighted the struggle and hardship faced by victims of GBC, particularly the most vulnerable populations, thereby amplifying their voices and advocating for their interests.
