Abstract:
The Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) serves as a framework for defining the competencies, knowledge, and professional expectations of teachers across different career stages. This study examines the role of the PPST in shaping pre-service teachers' preparedness, professional development, and teaching effectiveness while identifying challenges in meeting its domains. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, data was gathered through interviews, surveys, and document analysis to assess how pre-service teachers navigate PPST competencies, including lesson planning, classroom management, student assessment, and community engagement. Findings reveal that while pre-service teachers recognize the PPST's importance in guiding professional growth, challenges such as bridging theory and practice, adapting to diverse learners, and implementing effective assessments persist. To address these challenges, this study proposed a curriculum enhancement framework in teacher education programs, emphasizing experiential learning, structured mentorship, assessment literacy training, and digital integration. These interventions aim to better equip future educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the demands of 21st-century education. Furthermore, this study highlights the need for stronger alignment between teacher preparation programs and national education policies to ensure that pre-service teachers develop the competencies required for high-quality teaching and lifelong professional growth.
