Abstract:
This study examined the impact of sleep quality on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among residents living near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Kanungu District, Uganda. Using stratified random sampling, a cross-sectional design was used using a sample of 374 persons. Validated instruments, such as the WHOQOL-BREF and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), were used to measure HRQoL, stress levels, social well-being, and sleep quality. The findings showed that 20.59% of participants had either sleep apnea or insomnia, whereas 58.56% of participants reported having no sleep disorders. Regression analysis revealed that social well-being was negatively impacted by shorter sleep duration and poor mental health, whereas social well-being was positively impacted by higher stress levels and better sleep quality. The model demonstrated the important importance of sleep and mental health in HRQoL by explaining 81.5% of the variance in social well-being. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to improve sleep and mental health in this population. The findings emphasized the need for community-based interventions targeting sleep hygiene and mental health support to enhance overall well-being in this environmentally sensitive region.
