Abstract:
This study investigated the influence of lecturers' capacity building on job productivity in universities in Delta and Edo States, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. An ex-post facto research design which employed descriptive survey method was adopted, and a sample of 1,394 lecturers was drawn from a population of 4,426 across selected universities in the two states. Two researcher-designed instruments-Lecturers' Capacity Building Needs Questionnaire (LCBNQ) and Lecturers' Job Productivity Questionnaire (LJPQ)-were used to collect data. Data analysis involved mean, Pearson's correlation, and independent samples t-tests. Findings revealed that lecturers in both Delta and Edo States identified key capacity-building needs, including skills in grant proposal writing, innovative teaching strategies, high-quality research, and curriculum design. A significant difference was found in the capacity-building needs of lecturers between the two states, favoring Edo State. Furthermore, capacity building was found to significantly influence lecturers' job productivity in both states, with a stronger impact recorded in Delta State. These findings underscore the necessity of tailored and well-structured capacity-building initiatives to enhance lecturers' professional competence and institutional productivity. The study recommends strategic investment in academic staff development, particularly in research capacity, ICT tools, and mentorship, to bridge the observed disparities and boost overall productivity in Nigerian universities.
