Abstract:
Integrating Lean Construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a promising strategy to address inefficiencies, coordination challenges, and communication gaps in construction project delivery. This study investigates how Lean-BIM integration improves construction efficiency and stakeholder coordination in a large-scale public infrastructure project-the Auditorium Building at Public University in Central Java, Indonesia. A qualitative case study methodology was adopted, incorporating direct observations, semi-structured interviews, and project documentation to examine the implementation and interaction of Lean practices and BIM tools in real-world conditions. The findings reveal that Lean Construction, particularly through the Last Planner System, significantly enhanced short-term planning reliability and facilitated proactive constraint management. Meanwhile, BIM was found to reduce rework through effective clash detection and improve sequencing through 4D simulations. Their integration created a synergistic effect, enabling more informed planning decisions, increasing transparency, and fostering greater stakeholder engagement across disciplines. However, implementation challenges such as inconsistent adoption, limited digital literacy, and organizational fragmentation were also identified, particularly in the context of a developing country. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by offering practical insights into the operational integration of Lean and BIM, highlighting the contextual enablers and barriers. It underscores the importance of strategic leadership, stakeholder commitment, and adaptive implementation strategies to maximize the potential of Lean-BIM synergy in public infrastructure development.
