Abstract:
This study examines the drivers of plastic waste recycling within a circular economy framework in Hanoi, Vietnam, focusing on social capital, technology adoption, and policy incentives. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) with data from 400 respondents (200 urban, 200 peri-urban), we test a model integrating social, technological, and institutional factors. Results confirm that social capital, technology adoption, and policy incentives significantly enhance recycling efficiency, with community engagement serving as a crucial mediator. MGA reveals significant differences between urban and peri-urban communities, with urban areas showing stronger technology adoption influence (? = 0.35 vs. 0.20, p < 0.05) and peri-urban areas relying more on social capital (? = 0.40 vs. 0.25, p < 0.05). These findings contribute to interdisciplinary circular economy frameworks by elucidating the differential mechanisms through which socio-technical factors drive sustainable waste management practices across heterogeneous communities. The study provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers to design context-specific interventions that foster inclusive circular economy transitions in developing economies.
