Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the influence of social frustration, gender, and social support on suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, the study was conducted across three randomly selected public secondary schools in Ibadan North, Ibadan Southwest, and Ibadan North-East Local Government Areas. A total of 300 adolescents were purposively selected based on high volumes of respondents from each school, after screening. Data was collected using the Suicidal Ideation Scale for Adolescents, the Social Frustration Scale, and the Social Support Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that social frustration significantly predicted suicidal ideation, while social support had a protective effect, reducing the likelihood of suicidal thoughts. Gender did not have a significant influence on suicidal ideation. The regression model demonstrated that social frustration and social support were significant predictors of suicidal ideation, while gender did not contribute significantly. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions that address social frustration and promote social support among adolescents, as these factors play crucial roles in mental health outcomes. The limitations of the study include its cross-sectional design, reliance on self-reported data, and limited sample size. Future research should adopt longitudinal designs and consider additional influencing factors such as family dynamics and peer relationships to gain a more comprehensive understanding of suicidal ideation among adolescents.
