Abstract:
This study determined the relationship between the teachers' communication behavior and the learning engagement and reading ability of the elementary school pupils in Montessori De San Ildefonso, San Ildefonso, Bulacan during the School Year 2022 - 2023. With explanatory sequential mixed methods as research design and 58 pupils as respondents of the study, findings revealed that the assessments of the intermediate pupils as regards their teachers' communication behavior in terms of challenging, encouragement, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly was described as "outstanding" while in terms of controlling was described as "very satisfactory." Meanwhile, the elementary school pupils' learning engagement in terms of affective engagement was described as "high." On the other hand, the learning engagement of these pupils in terms of behavioral and cognitive engagement was describe as "above average." Majority of the respondents registered reading abilities which are below their grade levels. Based on the findings of the study, these conclusions were drawn: The communication behavior of the private elementary school teachers significantly influenced the learning engagement of their pupils. The communication behavior of the private elementary school teachers has no significant influence on the reading abilities of their pupils.
