Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between engagement in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs and the prevalence of risky behaviors among urban youth in Rwanda. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior, the research explores how participation in TVET might influence young people's decisions and actions concerning health, safety, and social norms. Utilizing qualitative interviews, data was collected from 30 urban youth informants in Nyarugenge in Kigali, Rwanda. The findings suggest an association between TVET engagement and certain risky behaviors, highlight the perceived benefits of TVET for reducing idle time. This study contributes to understanding the potential of TVET as a protective factor against risky behaviors and provides recommendations for policymakers and program implementers to leverage TVET for positive youth development in urban Rwanda.
