Abstract:
This study focused on stress management strategy and employees performance in tertiary hospitals in Rivers State. The objective of the study was to explore the effect of stress management strategy on employee performance. A qualitative research methodology was adopted and a structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The construct of the study include; removal of stressors, change stress perception and control stress consequences. Three hundred and eighty-seven (387) questionnaires were administered. From our findings it was discovered that organizational stress affects employees' performance. However, for employees to be effective, they must try to change their perception of stress as well as control the consequences of stress. Dialogue should be made to management to remove possible stressors in the organization. The study concludes that when a well defined stress management strategy is implored, it will go a long way in improving employee performance. Furthermore, it is very important that the working environment is being continuously monitored for stress related factors as well as create a healthy environment in which employees' can work in an efficient way. The study recommended that management of public hospitals should always consider the views of the employees with regards to welfare, promotion, overtime, pay, job design etc, before making decisions in order to avoid over stressing them; and develop a feedback system from employees on how to be more effective and efficient in their services.
