Abstract:
This literature review explores the multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis of complete and partial anodontia, focusing on genetic, environmental, and syndromic contributors. The study examines key hereditary patterns involving mutations in genes such as MSX1, PAX9, AXIN2, and EDA, highlighting their roles in tooth agenesis. It also discusses acquired causes including maternal illness, trauma, infections, and teratogenic drugs during critical stages of embryonic development. Diagnostic modalities such as panoramic radiographs, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and genetic testing are evaluated for their effectiveness in detecting and characterizing the severity and type of anodontia. Treatment strategies are assessed with emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach involving pediatric dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and prosthodontists. Functional and psychological implications of anodontia are explored, especially its impact on speech, mastication, and self-esteem. In conclusion, early detection and personalized treatment plans are vital for improving long-term oral health outcomes in affected individuals. The study calls for further research into gene-environment interactions and the development of regenerative dental therapies.
