Abstract:
The study investigated the effect of communication on project performance in Puntland, State of Somalia, with a focus on the Garowe General Hospital Expansion Project. It aimed to examine how various dimensions of communication-such as clarity, timeliness, feedback mechanisms, and information sharing-impacted the successful implementation and outcomes of development projects in the region. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with project stakeholders. The target population consisted of 149 individuals involved in the project, including team members, managers, and government officials. From this population, a sample size of 109 respondents was selected using simple random sampling. However, only 100 participants filled and returned the questionnaires. Additionally, purposive sampling was used to select key informants for interviews. Data were analyzed using statistical and thematic methods to establish the relationship between communication and project performance. The findings revealed that effective communication significantly improved project coordination, reduced misunderstandings, enhanced stakeholder involvement, and contributed to the timely completion of project goals. Despite these benefits, the study identified barriers such as inconsistent information flow and lack of communication skills as hindrances to optimal project performance. Based on the results, the study recommended strengthening communication channels, promoting feedback culture, and training stakeholders in effective communication practices. These insights contributed to a deeper understanding of project management in developing regions and offered practical guidance for improving the performance of future projects in Puntland and similar contexts.
