Abstract:
This qualitative phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of the Subanen people of Josefina, Zamboanga del Sur, before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on how livelihood activities were disrupted and how the community adapted and recovered. Guided by Creswell's approach to phenomenology, the research sought to understand the meaning individuals assign to their livelihood struggles amid pandemic-induced restrictions. Ten Subanen participants were selected using purposive sampling, and data were gathered through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic coding to identify patterns and significant statements reflective of shared experiences. Four major themes emerged: (1) Livelihood Disruption Across Time, which described how traditional farming and crafts were affected by travel bans and market closures; (2) Community Resourcefulness and External Support, which highlighted how local leadership, church aid, and government assistance helped mitigate the crisis; (3) Enduring Vulnerability and Changed Economic Realities, which revealed persistent economic instability and psychological distress; and (4) Hope, Resilience, and Reorganization, emphasizing cultural pride, grassroots leadership, and external partnerships that facilitated recovery. The study reveals that while the Subanen demonstrated resilience, they remain vulnerable due to systemic exclusion from aid programs and economic uncertainty. These findings suggest the need for culturally responsive policies and inclusive recovery strategies. By documenting their experiences, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of Indigenous resilience, informing both local governance and national frameworks for post-pandemic development that center Indigenous voices and identities.
