Abstract:
The paper examined staff development in higher education institutions in Nigeria for global competitiveness. The establishment of university system in the nation was followed with staff development process which was however, truncated by the economic recession and COVID-19 pandemic witnessed in the country. Consequently, there was brain drain and gross inadequacy of manpower. Hence, the paper studied and identified three (3) main measures for staff retention and production namely: staff recognition as an indispensable workforce in academic system, good working conditions and staff benefits and incentives. Based on these findings, the study recommends, among others, that staff should be motivated adequately.
