Abstract:
: This study examined the effects of school location and socio-economic status on senior secondary school students' mathematical aptitude in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. An ex post facto research design was adopted. The population comprised 1,892 SS II students across 48 public secondary schools during the 2023/2024 academic session. A sample of 286 students was selected using Yamane's (1967) statistical formula through multi-stage sampling techniques involving simple random and stratified sampling. Data were collected using two instruments: The Students Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Socio-Economic Status Scale (SSS). The instruments were validated and found reliable, with coefficients of 0.72 and 0.876 respectively. The researchers, with the help of mathematics teachers, administered the instruments under strict supervision. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, and ANOVA at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that school location and socio-economic status had significant effects on students' mathematical aptitude. Also, a significant interaction effect was found between location and socio-economic status. It was concluded that both factors influence mathematical aptitude. Based on these findings, it was recommended that educational stakeholders should address location- and income-based disparities by improving resource allocation and instructional practices across schools
