Abstract:
This research explores the influence of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) practices on reducing labour turnover in private universities across Uganda. Employee turnover remains a pressing issue in the higher education sector, undermining institutional efficiency, consistency, and quality service provision. The study focuses on key SHRM practices, including talent acquisition and retention, staff engagement, capacity building through training and development, performance appraisal systems, and compensation strategies, assessing their impact on employees' intentions to stay within their organizations. Adopting a case study design, data were gathered through structured questionnaires and interviews involving HR personnel, academic staff, and administrative employees from selected private universities. The results indicate that the strategic application of SHRM practices plays a pivotal role in minimizing labour turnover by enhancing job satisfaction, strengthening employee commitment, and cultivating loyalty to the institution. The study recommends that private universities reinforce their HR strategies by improving policy frameworks, offering ongoing professional development opportunities, and implementing competitive remuneration packages to effectively retain their workforce and promote institutional sustainability.
