Abstract:
This article critically examines the pervasive myths and factual realities surrounding minimum wage policies and wage awards for Nigerian government workers. Through a rigorous analysis of empirical data, historical context, and socio-economic factors, it reveals the complex interplay between legal frameworks, enforcement challenges, economic fluctuations, and technological advancements. Despite Nigeria's established legal provisions aimed at ensuring fair compensation, systemic issues, including corruption, political interference, and infrastructural deficiencies, hinder effective implementation and compliance. The study highlights regional disparities, inflationary pressures, and limited awareness among workers as key factors undermining the effectiveness of minimum wage policies. Moreover, it highlights the transformative potential of technology in enhancing transparency, facilitating grievance redress, and empowering workers with knowledge. By juxtaposing myths such as the universality and adequacy of the minimum wage with concrete data, the research advocates for comprehensive reforms that prioritize institutional integrity, stakeholder participation, and evidence-based policymaking. The findings emphasize that sustainable wage systems in Nigeria require adaptive strategies responsive to macroeconomic realities, inclusive policy processes, and technological innovation. Ultimately, this study aims to inform policymakers, labor unions, and stakeholders on how to foster a more equitable, transparent, and resilient remuneration landscape. It aims to bridge the gap between perception and reality, promoting social justice and economic stability across Nigeria's diverse socio-economic spectrum.
