Abstract:
Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that is still a public health challenge in Indonesia, including in rural areas such as Sumberketempa Village, Kalisat District, Jember Regency. This study aims to analyze the influence of family socioeconomic status on the incidence of stunting using a mixed method explanatory sequential model approach. Quantitative research involved 179 heads of families with children aged 6-59 months, while qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews with mothers of toddlers, integrated health post cadres, and village midwives. The results showed that family income and maternal education level had a significant relationship to the incidence of stunting (p < 0.05). However, non-economic factors such as nutritional understanding, parenting patterns, and maternal attendance at health activities also contributed. Qualitative data strengthen quantitative findings by showing that stunting is not solely caused by poverty, but also by limited knowledge and inappropriate parenting culture. Thus, efforts to prevent stunting need to include economic interventions as well as contextual and sustainable nutritional education.
