Abstract:
This study explores the preferences of the Hindu community regarding the implementation of the ngaben cremation ceremony at the Santha Yana Crematorium in Denpasar, as an alternative to traditional ngaben practices. The primary focus of this research is to identify the underlying reasons that drive people to choose a crematorium for performing this important ritual. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that factors such as time constraints, more affordable costs, price certainty, ease of access, and modern facilities are the main considerations in decision-making. Additionally, social pressures and customary sanctions in certain villages also compel people to seek more pragmatic alternatives. The Santha Yana Crematorium is seen as a solution that bridges the spiritual and practical needs of the Balinese Hindu community in the context of modern life, while also ensuring the continuity of the ngaben ritual in a more efficient manner. This study affirms that adaptation to social change does not necessarily mean abandoning tradition, but rather transforming the form of its implementation while remaining rooted in religious and cultural values.
