Abstract:
Orthodontic therapy is widely used to correct malocclusions and enhance oral function and aesthetics. However, the risk of dental caries during orthodontic treatment remains a critical concern, especially among patients with fixed appliances. This study investigates the interrelationship between orthodontic therapy and dental caries by analyzing both clinical and behavioral factors. A sample of 250 orthodontic patients was evaluated for caries prevalence, oral hygiene habits, and microbial findings. Results indicated a significantly higher caries incidence among patients with poor oral hygiene, high sugar intake, and fixed appliances. In contrast, patients using removable aligners and those adhering to proper hygiene and fluoride use had lower caries rates. The study highlights the multifactorial nature of caries development during orthodontic therapy, emphasizing the role of preventive strategies such as fluoride application, dietary control, and oral hygiene education. The findings support a collaborative approach in managing orthodontic patients to ensure successful outcomes and preserve long-term dental health. This research underscores the importance of early risk identification and individualized care in preventing dental caries during orthodontic treatment.
