Abstract:
This study examines the determinants of the adoption of liquefied natural gas in Bukavu. GNL is becoming more utilised for cooking in Bukavu but, little is known about the factors influencing its adoption. This study employed a mixed approach. The data were collected from 384 households. The results reveal that the adoption of LNG in Bukavu is influenced by the level of education of a household member (71.9%), wealth indicators (58.6%), environmental awareness and reduced energy expenditure ($11,919). However, despite the adoption of LNG, many households (75.00%) combine it with traditional energies. This situation is explained by the complexity of the obstacles households face in using this energy source. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes strategies that could optimise the adoption of LNG, including improving end-use technology, the professional behaviour of suppliers, increasing the number of sales outlets, raising awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of LNG, and involving the government in a sustainable energy transition. This work has highlighted that the adoption of LNG requires the effective involvement of stakeholders to ensure a sustainable energy transition.
