Abstract:
This study investigated impact of media convergence on news consumption among residents of Ketu-Kosofe local government area, Lagos State. The objectives of the study were to: to investigate the level of awareness of media convergence among residents' of Ketu-Kosofe Local Government Area; to identify factors that influence the use of converged media platforms for news consumption among residents' of Ketu-Kosofe Local Government Area; to determine perceive benefits or challenges of media convergence on news consumption among residents' of Ketu-Kosofe Local Government Area and also to investigate the relationship between media convergence and the credibility of news sources among residents of Ketu-Kosofe Local Government Area. The study is premised on the Diffusion of Innovation theory (DoI) and the Media Ecology theory. These two theories are highly applicable to how the media convergence have impacted news consumption among residents of Ketu-Kosofe Local Government Area. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents had a very high 229 (61.1%) extent of awareness of media convergence while only few had a very low 6 (1.6%) extent of awareness; majority of the respondent 292 (77.8%) consumes news content from the social media compared to a selected few 16 (4.4%) that consumes news content through traditional media platform (TV/Radio/newspaper) and smartphone(64.8%) as the preferred device of news consumption among residents of Keu-Kosofe Local government area. Ultimately, the fusion of all internet enabled platforms and the traditional media have become an essential source of news for respondents. The convenience, speed, and accessibility of converged media platforms have contributed to their popularity.
