Abstract:
This study investigated students' variables as correlates of students' academic achievement in Government-owned Universities in Delta State. To achieve the objectives of the study, three research questions were raised and hypothesized. The study adopted the correlational survey of ex-post facto research design. The population of the study comprised thirty-eight two hundred and eighty five (38,285) students of the four state-owned Universities. The sample consisted of three hundred and twenty (320) using multi-stage sampling procedure of purposive and simple random sampling techniques. The instruments used for the study were a structured questionnaire and students' academic achievement (CGPA). The instruments was validated by two experts The reliability of the instruments was determined using Cronbach alpha reliability method and coefficient values of 0.78 for study habit and 0.93 for peer pressure as a measure of internal consistency. The instrument was administered to the respondents with the aid of three assistants. The research questions were answered using coefficient of determination, while linear regression statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that there is no significant relationship between gender and students' academic achievement; there is a significant relationship between study habit and students' academic achievement and there is a significant relationship between peer pressure and students' academic achievement. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that schools should introduce time management workshops for students to help them balance academic and extracurricular activities, leading to improved academic achievement.
