Abstract:
Domestic violence remains a critical social concern with far-reaching implications for higher education institutions. This study investigates how domestic violence influences leadership effectiveness among student leaders in Ugandan universities. Drawing on data from a mixed-methods survey of 150 student leaders across six public and private universities, the research examines the relationship between exposure to domestic violence-whether as victims, witnesses, or perpetrators-and key leadership competencies such as decision-making, conflict resolution, communication, and motivation. Findings reveal that students who have experienced domestic violence often report reduced confidence, impaired interpersonal trust, and increased susceptibility to stress, which undermines their ability to lead effectively. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for university administrations, student leadership bodies, and national education authorities to integrate domestic violence awareness and trauma-informed leadership training into student governance programs.
