Abstract:
This paper investigates the impact of performance management on employee motivation in hospitality industry in Lagos State, Nigeria. The population of this study are employees of hospitality industries in Lagos State Nigeria. The study made use of a survey research methodology while a cluster sampling technique was used as sampling techniques, and the sample size was determined using Slovin's Formula with a sample size of 150 was used in this study. The research instrument adopted was a questionnaire. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for analyzing the data. The findings of this study showed that performance management helps to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals which enhance motivation by providing concrete targets and milestones (X = 3.18, SD = 2.03) and performance management help to create clear pathways for career progression which can motivate employees to perform better and achieve their career goals (X = 3.19, SD = 2.02). Furthermore, the result of the hypothesis showed a significant positive relationship between performance management and motivation of employees (r = .422; P<.05) which indicates that motivation of employees positively significantly influences performance management. The study recommends that hospitality industries should develop and implement structured performance management systems that include regular performance appraisals, clear performance metrics, and consistent feedback mechanisms.
