Abstract:
The integration of smartphones into technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions across Africa offers a transformative potential for expanding access to digital learning (e-learning). This study explores how smartphones, as affordable and user-friendly digital tools, can serve as a bridge to incorporate e-learning among urban youth. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Modal (TAM), this qualitative research employs a case study approach to investigate the perceptions, challenges, and opportunities associated with smartphone use in selected urban TVET institutions. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis, revealing that smartphones facilitate access to digital resources, promote self-directed learning, and enhance collaboration among learners. However, challenges such as digital literacy gaps and infrastructural limitations persist. This paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to optimize smartphone use in TVET settings, fostering equitable and sustainable digital learning ecosystems.
