Abstract:
This paper explores the 1916 revolt in Turkestan as a pivotal moment of anti-colonial resistance within the Russian Empire. The introduction outlines the historical context of the uprising, highlighting long-standing economic, political, and cultural grievances among the indigenous Muslim population. The literature review compares Soviet and post-Soviet historiographical perspectives, noting the evolution of scholarly interpretations from class-based to post-colonial and nationalist frameworks. Using a qualitative historical methodology, the study draws on archival documents, oral histories, and academic analyses to examine the underlying causes, nature, and consequences of the revolt. Particular attention is given to the June 25 conscription decree, which served as the immediate catalyst for mass protests and armed uprisings across Turkestan. Findings reveal that the revolt was rooted in structural injustices-such as land dispossession, legal inequality, and cultural repression-and was exacerbated by the exploitative wartime policies of the Russian Empire. Despite its fragmented leadership, the uprising displayed widespread discontent and significant geographic reach. The brutal suppression that followed, including massacres and forced displacement, left lasting demographic and psychological scars..The study concludes that the 1916 revolt should be recognized not only as a local reaction to imperial violence but as a foundational episode in the historical consciousness and national identity of modern Central Asia.
