Abstract:
Background: Medicinal plants have significantly influenced human existence for centuries, acting as natural cures for numerous ailments and health issues, and are abundant in bioactive chemicals with antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory attributes. Since infections are becoming more resistant to synthetic medications, medicinal plants offer a wealth of bioactive compounds that can stop fungal growth in a variety of ways. Objectives: study aimed to assess the antifungal potential of ethanolic extracts of Cymbopogon citratus against Candida albicans, a pathogenic yeast that causes a variety of infections. The study also looks into the extract's anticancer properties and antioxidant capabilities. Methodology: An experimental invitro laboratory-based experimental study was carried out at Department of Biology Faculty of Science, Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Saudi Arabia, between September to December 2024. The antifungal activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method, while the antioxidant potential was evaluated through DPPH radical scavenging assays. The cytotoxic effects of the extract on cancer cell lines were examined using the MTT assay. Results: Ethanolic extract exhibited significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans, suggesting its potential as a natural antifungal agent. Furthermore, the extract demonstrated strong antioxidant properties and notable anticancer activity, highlighting its possible therapeutic applications. These findings support the potential use of Cymbopogon citratus as a natural source of bioactive compounds with antifungal, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Conclusion: Cymbopogon Citratus have effective antifungal activity against Candida Albicans.
