Abstract:
This study explored the influence of English-language cartoons on the language development of Filipino preschoolers, particularly in vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and sentence construction, while also considering parental mediation. Data were collected from parent interviews, teacher feedback, and classroom observation checklists, then analyzed thematically. Results showed that children most frequently watched Peppa Pig, Cocomelon, Paw Patrol, PJ Masks, Mickey Mouse Funhouse, and Barba Papa. Viewing duration ranged from 15 minutes to six hours daily, often longer on weekends. Parents and teachers reported that children acquired new words, expressions, and functional phrases from cartoons, which they applied in both home and school settings. Pronunciation and intonation were influenced by character accents, while sentence construction improved mainly at the simple level. Importantly, co-viewing and parental explanation enhanced vocabulary and comprehension. While cartoons were generally beneficial, concerns about screen time and unusual accents emerged. Recommendations were provided to maximize benefits while promoting balanced media use.
