Abstract:
This research investigated the connection between EI and AP among music students at Delta State University, Abraka. EI is increasingly acknowledged as a crucial non-cognitive element that influences academic success, particularly in fields such as music, where emotional engagement, self-regulation, and teamwork are crucial. The research adopted a correlational survey method, involving 89 music students from the Department of Music, including those enrolled in the Music Education and Music Arts programs, spanning from the 200 to 400 levels. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire based on the EI Scale (Schutte et al., 1998), while AP was evaluated using students' Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) provided by the department. The questionnaire's reliability was verified through a trial study with 30 music students from the University of Benin, which resulted in a Cronbach's alpha of 0.79. The data were examined using Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between EI and AP, indicating that students with higher EI tend to attain better academic outcomes. Key elements like self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy were recognized as critical factors contributing to academic success. The study concluded that EI is a valuable asset both personally and academically, contributing to greater resilience, motivation, and improved learning outcomes. The research recommended integrating EI training into the music curriculum, providing workshops and counseling services, and implementing policies that promote the development of non-cognitive skills in higher education.
