Abstract:
This study examined the effects of the Muri Emirate Council's security management strategies on insecurity in Taraba State. Anchored on the Governance and Traditional Authority frameworks, the research adopted a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A total of 384 questionnaires were distributed, with 379 validly returned, complemented by semi-structured interviews with traditional leaders, vigilante members, and security personnel. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression were used to analyze quantitative data, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative evidence. Findings revealed that the Muri Emirate Council's conflict resolution strategies significantly reduce insecurity, accounting for 47.2% of the variation in peace outcomes. Respondents highlighted mediation, reconciliation, and intelligence sharing as central to these outcomes. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, political interference, and weak statutory recognition limit effectiveness. The study concludes that traditional institutions remain indispensable in grassroots security governance. It recommends statutory recognition of the Emirate's security role, capacity building for community security actors, and strengthened collaboration with formal security agencies.
