Abstract:
Consciousness vis-à-vis Social-Intellectual Relations in Selected Short Stories: Basis for the Development of a Teaching Guide" is a qualitative content analysis study. The study aimed to explore the social conditions, consciousness, intellectual and social relations, and the connection of themes from selected literary works to the values emphasized by the Department of Education. This research yielded significant results highlighting five selected works: Ang Kwento ni Mabuti, Tata Selo, Ang Mangingisda, Taguan, and Impeng Negro. In these works, family-related issues such as abuse are evident, which pushed the main characters to distance themselves, escape, or resist. Social awareness was also evident, such as the protagonists' lack of access to education, poverty, and the oppression by those in power. These circumstances revealed intellectual and social relations within the texts. A recurring theme of abuse can be drawn from the stories: physical abuse as experienced by Impen and Openg, emotional abuse in the case of Mabuti, and economic oppression as seen in Tata Selo. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends integrating these works into the Department of Education's Catch-up Friday program since the study also examined the relationship of the stories' themes to the values promoted by the Department-Makatao (humane), Makabansa (nationalistic), Makakalikasan (environmentally conscious), and Maka-Diyos (God-centered). From this analysis, the researcher developed a teaching guide that can be used to incorporate the stories' themes and values into classroom instruction.
