Abstract:
The study evaluated the effect of a book clubs on reading interest, reading habits, and achievement in English language among secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State, using The Vale College, Ibadan as a case study. Quasi-experimental design with embedded survey design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised all secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State, wherein a total of 46 students who were active members of the book club in the selected school were purposively sampled. Test scores (participants' performance in examinations before and after the implementation of the book club program) of the participants were used to measure their achievement in English language. Similarly, a 15-item validated instrument tagged Student Interest in Reading and Reading Habits Questionnaire (SIRRHQ) was used to gather information about participants' interest in reading and reading habits. A reliability coefficient of 0.81 was established for the instrument using Cronbach's alpha. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics of ANCOVA and ordinal regression analysis were used for data analysis. The study concluded that there is a positive significant relationship between book clubs and students' interest in reading, reading habits, and achievement in English language; and that book clubs have a positive impact on students' interest in reading, reading habits, and achievement in English language. The study recommends that all teacher-librarians in secondary schools should be mandated to spearhead the establishment of active book clubs in their respective schools. Also, book clubs should be made mandatory in all secondary schools, as they will facilitate the overall development of students.
