Abstract:
Urban retail stores significantly impact environmental sustainability through high resource consumption, waste generation, and community engagement. In Nigeria, rapid urbanization and infrastructural limitations reveal regulatory gaps that exacerbate these impacts. To address this, NESREA has implemented frameworks covering waste control, effluent standards, ozone protection, and audits to promote compliance and sustainable development. This study evaluates Jendol Superstore's environmental operations and regulatory adherence against national and international standards. Using a structured site observation checklist and semi-structured interviews with the store manager, the research identified strong operational practices such as effective waste segmentation, cardboard recycling, regular refrigeration, grease trap maintenance, and compliant chemical storage. However, deficiencies were observed in energy and water monitoring, automation, environmental messaging visibility, regulatory documentation, and community engagement. Notably, energy and water efficiencies are underutilized, and no formal audits or Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are evident. While Jendol meets several compliance requirements, it remains vulnerable to inefficiencies and regulatory risks amid evolving enforcement standards. Recommendations include installing automated resource controls, formalizing extended producer responsibility programs, enhancing community outreach and signage, strengthening documentation procedures, and exploring renewable energy sources. Targeted modernization and institutionalized environmental management can position Jendol as a sustainability leader, serving as a replicable model for urban retail stores in similar contexts.
