Abstract:
This study investigates the school culture and teachers' job commitment in improving public secondary schools of Delta State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses are formulated to test and answer the questions raised. The independent variable is the school culture while the dependent variable is teachers' job commitment. Correlational-survey design is adopted for the study. The population of this study is the total number of principals and teachers in all the public secondary schools in Delta State (11010), with sample size of 438 respondents using the multi-stage sampling technique. Of the 438 questionnaires administered on the respondents, 406 (93%) valid questionnaires are retrieved. The research instrument is a carefully modified structured standardized four (4) points Likert scale. The data obtained is analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings reveal the dominant school culture among the secondary schools in Delta State is the professional collaboration, and the prevalent dimension of commitment is the affective commitment. Furthermore, a moderate positive interrelationship is established between school culture and teachers' job commitment in both urban and rural secondary schools. There is no significant difference in school culture and teachers' job commitment in Delta State public secondary schools based on gender (male/ female), but there is in job commitment on the basis of cluster of teaching years.
